What do we want most from those who love us?
To be appreciated for who we are.
We are, in our deepest selves, as vulnerable as the day we were born.
Though years might armor us with experience, behind that flesh-bound armor, we are delicate spirits indeed.
It is these delicate spirits that, when love exists, intertwine.
It is these delicate spirits that, when love retreats, know pain.
We would do well to remember this.
When first we know the joy of a baby's birth, we treat our small one with gentleness and care.
When first we know the joy of a new love, we treat our dear one with sweet affection.
As time moves forth, it is easy to grow less careful and affectionate.
But each growing child, or maturing love, retains that delicate spirit within.
Each of us remains vulnerable.
And each of us, with nurturing and appreciation, will flourish mightily in the presence of love.
